One Light Workshop – Nashville, TN

The One Light Workshop was a very nice learning experience. Zack Arias is not only a great photographer but he’s a fantastic teacher. The workshop was laid out and planned well. There was a concise agenda with each item covered in detail and it proceeded in a specific order so that the most benefit would come out of it. It’s funny because I was always intimidated by flash, so I hardly used it. You know, things like “inverse-square law” and reciprocal numbers regarding flash power, aperture and shutter speed. Zack explained these things and others so simply that I can’t believe how easy it is once you understand it. Years of trial and error have been shaved off my career as a photographer. Mostly because with every error I’d put down my camera and give up on the trial thus letting too much time go by. You know what’s also funny? When I look at the work of certain photographers, the same work I used to look at and wonder how they did it; now not only do I know how they did it but I can recreate it easily. Like Zack said, “flash is predictable.” Once you understand it you can reproduce any desired result. Since this is so, the real question we should be asking any photographer is, “what was your vision behind the image?”

The workshop was held at the studio of Jeremy Cowart, who is an amazing photographer. His work is far beyond the stuff we learned at the OneLight Workshop, but the fundamentals are still there. Personally that’s where I feel the most came out of this workshop… understanding the fundamentals of light.

Below are just a few examples of the images I captured at the workshop during our lessons. Oh… and No Photoshop! Aside from just a very tiny bit of sharpening for the web, these photos have no post processing.
